Although required under Schedule 5 of the Education Act 1944 to represent the Church of England, other Christian denominations and other religions, teachers' associations and the Local Education Authority, it was given added impetus by the Education Act 1988 which in addition required that all new Agreed Syllabuses should reflect the predominantly Christian tradition as well as representing the other principal religious traditions.
