Statutory committee appointed under the Children's Act, 1948 (11 & 12 Geo. VI c. 43) which required county and county borough councils to provide for the care of all children under 18 deprived of a normal home life, including the provision of residential homes, boarding out, fostering, guardianship and duties in relation to adoption. Inherited functions from the Public Assistance, Public Health and Housing and Education Committees (see CC1/20, CC1/18 & CC1/12). The Act required the appointment of a Children's Officer. The Committee was re-named in May 1948 and again in July 1966. It was disbanded in 1970 when its responsibilities were transferred to the Social Services Committee (see CC1/42)
