Scope and Content

Statutory committee appointed to administer the Poor Law and Registration functions transferred from Boards of Guardians to the County Council under Parts I & II of the Local Government Act, 1929 (19 & 20 Geo. V c. 17). Under the Oxfordshire Poor Law Scheme, the county was divided into seven areas within each of which a Guardians Committee was appointed to consider applications and administer poor relief. Existing Poor Law institutions and their staff were transferred into the new system. In 1936 a Classification Sub-Committee was appointed to consider alternative schemes for replacing existing mixed institutions with specialised ones for particular classes of individual. Under the terms of the National Assistance Act, 1948 (11 & 12 Geo. VI c. 29) the Oxfordshire Poor Law Scheme was abolished and the Committee's functions were transferred to the Children's Care, Welfare and Health Committees (see CC1/30, CC1/35 & CC1/33).

Some records of institutions transferred to the County Council under the 1929 Act can be found with the Poor Law Union Records (PLU1-8)
