The Brittle Bone Society (BBS) was founded in Dundee in 1968 by Margaret Grant and is the only UK-wide charity organisation set up to provide support to people affected by the bone condition, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). The Society works closely with specialist medical units and other professionals from across the United Kingdom, plays a crucial role in promoting research into the condition and offers practical support, advice and encouragement to patients and their relatives. The Society continues to operate from its Dundee headquarters and currently has a membership in the region of 1000.

Margaret Grant was the founder of the Brittle Bone Society, the UK’s leading charity for the support of people with the rare bone condition Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI).
She received an honorary doctorate from Dundee University in 2018, the year of the charity’s 50th anniversary. She was also named Dundee Citizen of the Year in 1975. Other achievements included the OIF (Osteogenesis Impefercta Foundation) award in 1982 for hosting the first international conference for people with OI and the Tunstall Telecoms National caring award in 1988. She was awarded the MBE in 1989

When appraising the Society's papers, the decision was taken to sample some record sets rather than accession the papers in full. The Archive, for example, did not take all records relating to the Society's can collecting activities or all papers relating to its various fundraising events. In addition, it was decided that the Archive would not take files about individual Society members or all of the Society's financial papers, choosing instead to accession materials that provided summary overviews of key financial activities and Society memberships. The Archive also decided not to accession all materials held by Society employees as much of this information related to low level business transactions and was more fully documented elsewhere within the collection. Some low level correspondence was, however, accessioned as evidence of administration practices in place at the Society. In addition, the Society itself decided to retain some papers for use in current business activities, opting to maintain files relating to individual members along with other financial and contextual business records.

The records were created, received and managed by the Brittle Bone Society (BBS) as part of day-to-day business activity. They also includes materials collected by prominent people associated with the society.
