Scope and Content

LETTER: Iris D. Back (Mrs)¹ to Miss Patch.

“Soon after I had posted my previous letter (with enclosed photograph copies of my great grandparents² and great-great uncle³, of Priory Foundry, I found an old letter of my late uncle’s⁴. I had intended copying an extract to send with the photographs, but the letter became mislaid, and I thought I had lost it. The enclosed snaps had also become mislaid.

My late father⁵ and uncle⁴ used to tell scathingly funny stories about their “Aunty Peggy” ⁶ who, to put it mildly, hardly qualified as their favourite aunt! They seemed to have learnt in a hard school, but they learnt well, they attended evening classes, so continuing the education they had begun at the Albion Square School which still educates (I believe) in Pembroke Dock.

Their father⁷ had died young, and their mother⁸ remarried when they reached their early teens. They had a good stepfather⁹ who lived up to the early years of their marriages and was then survived by their mother, who lived to be nearly 85. In her early 70s she went to live with her twin sister¹⁰ in Hazelbeach (near Llandstadwell) Neyland, but the twin died a few days before the joint 80th birthday which was to be celebrated with gusto by their children and grandchildren. (I think the excitement must have been too much for my great aunt).

I have written a few more remembered facts at the back of the enclosed photos and hope they will interest you as the discovery of Priory Foundry site did me, at Easter.

Yours sincerely,

Iris Back”
