Recorded interviews with founder members of the South Wales Miners' Federation. The interviews are mainly concerned with trade-union activity and membership and the SWMF. However other topics covered include personal experiences of working in the mines, farming, recreation, political influences and activity, mining accidents, religion, safety in the mines, strikes and other aspects of community life. The recordings were made 1972-1974 but cover the period 1878-1974 in subject matter.

This study consists of recorded interviews with founder members of the South Wales Miners' Federation (SWMF) which was formed in 1898. The SWMF became the National Union of Mineworkers (South Wales Area) in 1945.
