The county of Flintshire falls within the Diocese of St Asaph and consists of over fifty ecclesiastical parishes, including Hanmer (since 1849). The records of individual ecclesiastical parishes in Flintshire include registers of baptisms, marriages and burials, as well as records of the churchwardens and Parochial Church Councils, parish charities, schools, clubs and societies. Parish records were deposited at the Clwyd Record Office, following an agreement of 1976 between the Church in Wales and the Welsh County Councils. The parish of Hanmer was in the diocese of Lichfield until 1541, when it was transferred to the newly-created diocese of Chester. In 1849, it was transferred to the diocese of St Asaph, where it remains. The Rev. M. H. Lee, whose personal papers are included in this collection, was the Rector of Hanmer between 1867-1891. On the 3rd February 1889, the church was destroyed by fire, and partially rebuilt; the chancel was not rebuilt until 1936.
