Scope and Content

Tulloch worked on Wingate in peace and war for over a decade. The gestation of the book was complicated, and Tulloch worked through several versions. This series comprises some of the drafts of the book; they reveal considerable changes to the concept and organisation of the study which were made during the 1960s (most of the draft chapters do not follow the final arrangement and content of the published work), and it is clear that the drafts were subject to major editing between 1968 when a first (or possibly second) version of the book was completed) and publication in 1972. In the early 1960s, Tulloch appears to have planned a joint study with the military scholar Otto Heilbrun, but this was dropped after disagreements in 1964-5. Tulloch's text also seems to be changed significantly by an editor between 1969-70.

The documents in this series show some overlaps with the research notes (TOW/2/4) and the correspondence files (TOW/2/6), in that they contain occasional notes and letters as well as the draft typescripts proper.
