Scope and Content

Pamphlet entitled Are There Two Earls of Mar?, published in 1876. This is an essay in the form of a dialogue, explaining the 1875 dispute between John Erskine, Earl of Kellie, and John Francis Goodeve-Erskine. The author is defending the latter. There is an appendix, which contains texts in favour of Goodeve-Erskine such as: 'Protest of the Right and Honurable the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres...against the Earl of Kellie answering...to the Title of Earl of Mar', 'protest of the Right Honourable John Francis Erskine, Earl of Mar and Baron Garioch, Asserting his Right to Appear and Vote at Holyrood, As legally in Possession of the Ancient Earldom of Mar, standing as the only Title of Mar on the Union Roll', 'protests against the Earl of Kellie, tendered and lodged at Holyrood, at same date, by the Marquis of Huntly, the Marquis of Ailsa (the Earl of Cassilis), the Earl of Morton, and the Earl of Caithness', 'Excerpt from Proceedings of House of Lords as to Earl of Roseberry's Resolution, 12th May 1822', more extracts from the House of Lords' proceedings and from newspapers, and extract from correspondencen between Mssrs Hunter, Blair and Cowan, and Mssrs Gibson-Craig, Dalziel, and Brodies, June 1869.
