Includes, at the back: list of books read, 1856, letters written and received in 1856 and 1857. Includes pressed flower, list of people invited to a party, 30 Jan 1857, list of contributions for Mrs Wilson, 22 Dec 1856 and small sketch of a fish. Journal begins in Southend, before travelling to Hastings (St Leonards) on 25 July and, after a brief stay in London, on to Tatton Park. Notable entries include: (30 August) visit to Liverpool and Birkenhead, concert at the Philarmonic Hall including Piccolomini; (6 Sept) visit to Dunham Park [Dunham Massey], Lord Stanford's [Stamford] home, with description; (18 Sept) visit to the Crystal Palace Antedeluvian gardens and Picture Gallery; (8 Nov) 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'Pizzaro' (with Mr and Mrs [Charles and Ellen] Kean) at the Princess Theatre; (9 Nov) sermon by Mr Gledall - Annie expresses disapproval at music or any kind of ceremonial or ritual; (24 Nov) went to hear Mrs [Mary E.] Webb give a reading of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', arranged for her by Mrs [Harriet Beecher] Stowe; (15 Jan) dinner conversation re the discoveries of Dr [David] Livingston [Livingstone], just returned from Africa; (17 Jan) division of London into ten postal districts; (30 Jan) large party at the Fishers' home in York Place; (24 and 31 Jan) attended [William Makepeace] Thackeray's lectures on George III and IV; (8 Apr) Handel's 'Messiah' at Exeter Hall, including Clara Novello.
