Scope and Content

Correspondence and papers reflecting Professor Phillips' association with the British College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (later the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists), including discussions about the founding of the College, research material on the history of obstetrics, committee minutes and reports, Annual Dinner menus, presscuttings, greeting cards, and correspondence concerning the opening of the College building in Regent's Park.

This collection includes correspondence between Professor Phillips and Professor Blair-Bell, co-founder of the RCOG and First President, and between Phillips and Dr John Pringle, a personal friend and colleague, together with papers collated by Professor William Fletcher-Shaw, co-founder of the RCOG covering the history of the College and of obstetrics.

Administrative / Biographical History

Professor Phillips was a foundation Fellow of the British College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and was a member of Council from 1929 to 1940, serving on many college committees, including the Library Committee, the External Relations Committee, and the Fellowship Selection Committee. He was vice-president of the College from 1937 to 1940, and left a significant part of his fine collection of historic obstetric books to the College Library.
