Administrative / Biographical History

In 1968 the Scottish Woollen Technical College was renamed the Scottish College of Textiles to accurately describe its wider function. It had already moved into new premises on the Netherdale Campus in Galashiels in 1965. The Department of Design extended its range to include textile print, knitting and knitwear design. Computerised weft flat - bed knitting was introduced as was computer aided design. In 1975, the College shifted its efforts from the production of fabric to take into account garment manufacture and fashion design. Four year sandwich courses were established in Clothing Technology and Management. Courses were developed in Business Studies, Management, Accounting, Office and Administration Studies and Computing and Information Studies.

Between 1978 and 1982 another building programme was complete, including self-catering halls of residence, student union, and extension to chemical laboratories and design studios.

In 1989 the CNAA, recommended that the accreditation of the Colleges degree programmes should be transferred from CNAA to Heriot-Watt University. Thereby, the Scottish College of Textiles, as an Associate College, constituted the Faculty of Textiles of Heriot-Watt University. In 1998 the College merged with the University to become the School of Textiles and Design.
