Scope and Content

John Playford : A collection of glees, motets, rounds, catches, etc., for 2, 3, and 4 voices, mostly in the handwriting of John Playford, many of the items being found in his Musical Companion, 1667-1673, especially in the 'Second part'. c.1660.
The four vellum covers bear the initials 'I.P.', the second part of which bears the note: 'Decemi. 30.1674. Note that I James Clifford bought this sett of musick books of Mr Rich. price's widow Mrs Dorothy Price for 7s.-6d.'
The flyleaf of the last book contains the name of 'our Musicall Clubb' in Old Jewry.

(i) Cantus primus, ff. 5, 11, 14, 47.
(ii). Cantus secundus, ff. 6,10,12,13, 34.
(iii). Bassus, ff. 7, 10, 14, 44.
(iv). Basso continuo, ff. 9, 31, 33.
Photocopies, taken from part books in the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington, are in the box as substitutes for the following folios:
(i) Cantus primus, ff. 5v, 11r, 11v, 14, 47.
