Scope and Content

LETTER: G Fingland, Penmon Limestone Quarries, Beaumaris to Mr. Evans sending him information on the three quarries in the district. Firstly, the Penmon Marble Quarries, not worked for the last 10-12 years. The stone is limestone with fossils showing in it and not marble at all. It was used for the building trade, and monumental work as it looked very fine when polished. The other two quarries are the Dinmor Park Quarry and the Flagstaff quarry. Both are limestone quarries and are worked solely to supply the demands of the iron works in Glasgow and demand s of those in Ayrshire. At present idle because of a trade depression, the quarries usually employ 200 men and have an annual output of 120-150,000 tons. The stone is blasted out in big blasts, then blasted again to a size that can be transported to steam driven crushes where the stone is crushed to sizes small enough to pass through a 5 inch ring. It is then ready for shipment in steamers of 300-800 tons. All of the quarries have existed for a long time. The writer believes they were first opened for the building of Holyhead breakwater. They were taken over by the present firm in1898 to produce stone for the iron trade. Now no building stone is produced although it is of excellent quality for building. Probably the cost of transportation makes it uncompetitive.
