Administrative / Biographical History

In 1836 the Ecclesiastical Commissioners were established in order to oversee the financial management of the Church of England. They were empowered to deal in certain areas of parochial property without recourse to Orders in Council and specific instruments were issued as the means through which these dealings were conducted. From 1920 the Commissioners sent out more general instruments to cover their more usual business. In 1947 the Ecclesiastical Commissioners were combined with Queen Anne's Bounty to become the Church Commissioners for England (Church Commissioners Measure, 1947).
