Records of the RCOG Honorary Treasurer

Papers of the RCOG Honorary Treasurer, including correspondence covering appeals and funding, accounts, sponsorship, bequests and legacies, building maintenance and accommodation, budgets, publications, the launch of Wellbeing, and trips overseas made by John Malvern during his tenure as Honorary Treasurer.

The Office of Honorary Treasurer is elected to Council by Fellows and Members, with the term of office set as a maximum of seven years. The post has been in place since 1926, when Comyns Berkeley was made Treasurer to the Founding Committee of the College.

The Honorary Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the financial matters of the College, and by 2008 his main duties included:

Ensuring that an annual budget is produced and that capital expenditure is appropriately planned.

Overseeing decisions about salary levels and bonus allocation for staff.

Reviewing budgets of all postgraduate meetings.

Determining and reviewing the fee subscriptions, examinations, registration, overseas funding allocation and rental of premises.

Presenting quarterly accounts of income and expenditure for F&E, Council and Investment Panel.

The Honorary Treasurer is responsible for chairing the Publications Management, BJOG Management and Management Audit Committees, and is a Member of the of following Committees/Boards:

Services Board, TOG Editorial Board, Congress Committee, Finance & Executive Committee, Investment Advisory Panel, Meetings Committee, Investment Advisory Panel, and WellBeing – Member of Council, Finance Committee and Fund Raising Committee

Arrangement is roughly chronological until Mr Tacchi's term of office, when an alphabetical subject-based filing system was instituted. Files may overlap between honorary treasurers; where this has occurred they have been placed on the list according to the earliest date on the file.

Permission of RCOG Senior Management is required for external access to College records less than twenty years old.

The records in this series were appraised in accordance with the internal disposal agreement between the College Archivist and the Honorary Treasurer's Secretary.

Records of honorary treasurers were not retained as a discrete file series until Mr Pinker's term of office (1970-1977). Honorary treasurers' papers prior to this period will primarily be found with the College's financial records in RCOG/F series.
