In 1901 Owens College celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. Official golden jubilee celebrations were however delayed until 1902 because of problems in completing the Whitworth Hall. The Jubilee was used to launch a new fund-raising venture, to be used for new chairs (e.g. Hebrew, architecture), develop the Library, build a new bacteriological laboratory, endow research fellowships and a staff superannuation fund, and create reserves which would help avoid the financial problems the College had suffered through the 1890s.
