The College Meeting was set up in 1857 as a forum for Owens College academic staff to discuss issues of academic policy. The Meeting did not have formal constitutional status, and its views were not binding on the College Trustees. In general, relations with the Trustees were harmonious. The Meeting was effectively superseded by the Senate when the new governance structure was introduced in 1871. Meetings were held approximately monthly and chaired by the Principal.
