Operational Records

The documents in this series are contemporaneous or near-contemporaneous to the Chindit campaigns. Tulloch's reason for accumulating these documents is evidently connected to his later researches. It is assumed that he had access to these documents in his role as chief of staff at Chindit HQ, and that he set aside or copied certain documents for his own later reference (as he was aware of the conflicts and differing opinions over Chindits operations at the time). Some of the documents are pre- or post-operation reports and assessments, which would have been produced in multiple copies. Other documents including communications between Wingate and Indian Army GHQ and South East Asia command were evidently copied and retained by Tulloch, and the 'originals' of some of these documents may now be public records. Some of these documents are very important to controversies about Wingate's strategic thinking, and the development of operational planning for Operation Thursday. It is not known whether Tulloch had originally retained more documents and selected these as relevant to his later research.
