Includes a letter from Michael Calvert, 4 Sep 1970, commenting on Viscount Slim: "it makes one very sad that a man in his position should tell such lies", also in a letter of 30 Jul 1970, Calvert maintains that 77th brigade was never intended to cut communications of the Japanese 15th Army attacking 4th Corps [Calvert commanded 77th brigade] , says his belief in Wingate's methods after revisiting them has been renewed, and he claims that Chindit officers were overlooked for promotion because of hostility of more "establishment" officers. Also letters from Tom Brodie (Chindit commander, 14th Brigade ) who feels sure he was not meant to attack Indaw, but was ordered to do so later, but cannot remember when; Alice Hey, including a letter of 28 Mar [1969], where she claims felling against Wingate was due in part to his work in Palestine, also many did not like the fact that Churchill liked him, says Granville and Sybil Wingate are too concerned about the family's reputation and are not friendly, Monica Wingate, Granville Wingate, Michael Elliot-Batemen, Arthur Swinson, Dizzy Allen, Cortez Enloe (4 Dec 1969, who claims US military planning in Burma theatre was confused), Riley Sutherland (US military historian), 28 Nov 69, accepting some US officers in SE Asia held anti-British views, and his view of Claire Chennault (US air commander) that he had "great tactical skill" but was "something of the charlatan".
