- John Orchard (1838-1907) was born in Devon. He entered the Bible Christian ministry in 1861 and joined the mission to Australia in 1863. He later moved to New Zealand and served as President of the New Zealand Methodist Church in 1899. He was prominent in civic affairs and at the time of his death was a member of the City Council in Christchurch and the governor of a technical college.
