  • Copies of commissions of rural deans [RD.COM], 1842-2000. Unlisted. Note: Occasional commissions to clergy to act as rural deans are to be found in the institution act books [see GB 193 Inst.AB].

Administrative / Biographical History

A rural dean is a member of the clergy who is in charge of the deanery, usually consisting of 12 parishes. He is appointed to the role by the archbishop and the archdeacon and receives a commission to act as rural dean for a particular deanery.
