Taylor was born in Lowestoft on 7 July 1941, the son of a pharmacists. He gained his medical education at the University of Manchester and held resident appointments at Salford Royal Hospital, MRI, Booth Hall Children's Hospital and Ashton-under-Lyne District Infirmary. In 1969, Taylor was appointed registrar in gynaecological pathology and St Mary's Hospital, and continued to hold gynaecological and obstetric appointments at the hospital for a number of years. He was also clinical tutor at the University of Manchester and was a member of Manchester Medical Society and of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society. Taylor was later consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist to Harrogate Health District, Yorkshire.
