Scope and Content

This collection comprises the papers of the following Royal College of Midwives Boards, relating to providing education and research, professional affairs and employment relations services to midwives in all four countries within the United Kingdom:

  • RCM/F1 - Royal College of Midwives Board for Northern Ireland, 1960-1990

Administrative / Biographical History

At first the Royal College of Midwives (formally known as the Midwives Institute) was concerned with representing the interests of midwives in England and Wales. However In 1946 the Scottish Midwives Association was amalgamated with the Royal College of Midwives. At around the same time, the Ulster Midwives Association was organised to form the Royal College of Midwives Northern Ireland Council.

Today all of the four countries in the United Kingdom - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - has a RCM Board, which provide education and research, professional affairs and employment relations services to midwives in these areas.

Arrangement

The original order of material is retained, although where this is not possible the arrangement of files has been based on the functions and activities of the organisation as well as chronology, subject and the needs of users.

Access Information

Permission is required for external access to records less than twenty years old. Also restrictions apply if material includes personal information of living individuals. All other records are open to research by appointment, Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm. There is no record of the source or date of acquisition before this material was deposited under the terms of a collection care agreement at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in May 2011.
