Administrative / Biographical History

John Anthony Dunn graduated from University College, Oxford in 1972 and was awarded the degree of D.Phil in 1978. As a student he spent two periods of study in the Soviet Union on an exchange scheme administered by the British Council. After a year at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, in 1976 he was appointed a lecturer in what was then the Department of Slavonic Languages and Literatures at the University of Glasgow, where he taught Russian and Polish; in 1992 he was promoted to senior lecturer.

His main research interests are Russian and Slavonic linguistics and (since the beginning of the 1990s) the Russian mass media. In 2006 he took early retirement and moved to Bologna, since when he has published Modern Russian Grammar (Routledge, 2009) and Russian for all Occasions (Routledge, 2019), both co-authored with Shamil Khairov, as well as Review into the present state of Slavonic and East European Studies in the higher education system of the UK (Higher Education Academy, 2013).
