Photographs of the official opening of the Abbey Works, Port Talbot, organised by the Steel Company of Wales. The event drew a large number of guests, who were given a tour of the works and entertained by a brass band. A large meal was put on for all the guests, requiring a large number of catering staff and waiters and waitresses, and speeches were made. The guest of honour, Hugh Gaitskill, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and his wife are shown in many of the photographs, and also the Mayor of Port Talbot, Richard Evan, and the Mayor of Swansea. The photographs show the guests’ tour of the works, and also show the fleet of coaches laid on for the guests, guests arriving by train, the army of chefs, the brass band, a film cameraman; and also demonstrate the size of the event, in particular showing the tables laid out for the meal. 17 July 1951
