Scope and Content

Four folders of correspondence relating to the estate of Frankie Howerd, following his death in April 1992.
1. Folder of correspondence between Tessa Le Bars and others, 2005-2010, relating to the running of the affairs of the Frankie Howerd estate following his death. Includes:
- Correspondence between Tessa Le Bars and solicitors Gregory Rowcliffe Milners, relating to the administration of the estate;
- Four pages of Frankie Howerd’s personal stationary, signed by him but otherwise blank;
- Copy of a Deed of Gift, 6 August 2007, assigning two-thirds copyright to Howerd’s sister Betty, signed by Frankie Howerd’s partner Dennis Heymer.
2. File of correspondence between Tessa Le Bars and others, late 1990s, relating to the running of the affairs of the Frankie Howard estate after his death. The correspondence mostly comprises one-way correspondence with (from) a fan concerning Frankie Howerd, but in a way only he understands.
3. File of correspondence between Tessa Le Bars and others, 1999-2002, relating to the running of the affairs of the Frankie Howerd estate after his death, including:
- a small collection of correspondence and other material relating to ‘A Tribute to Frankie Howerd OBE’, held in York on 27-28 March 1999;
- letter from Graham McCann to Tessa Le Bars, 27 September 1999, informing her of his intention to write a biography of Frankie Howerd;
- correspondence between Tessa Le Bars and the BBC, 2002, relating to the production ‘Reputations’ (BBC, 2002), and the upset caused to Dennis Heymer by the prospect of revelations about Howerd’s personal life.
4. File of correspondence between Tessa Le Bars and others, 2003-2004, mostly defending Frankie Howerd’s memory in the face of a series of documentaries focussing on his sexuality. Includes:
- Form letter from Tessa Le Bars to interested parties, 10 December 2003, discouraging potential interviewees from participating in any more documentaries about Howerd;
- Correspondence between Tessa Le Bars, the BBC and Equity, 2004, objecting to the use of extracts from Howerd’s work in ‘Behind the Laughter’ (BBC, 2003);
- Two long printed extracts from the Graham McCann biography, with a covering letter from McCann to Tessa Le Bars, 14 April 2004.
