This HLF heritage project explored the experiences of those living through the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. Oral history interviews were carried out with people who eventually migrated to Huddersfield to record their memories of pre-Partition, the Partition era and what happened afterwards.
The project led to the creation of a film and educational resources to allow newer generations to connect and empathise with the past and across different communities.
2017 marked the 70th anniversary of Indian independence which led to the creation of two new independent nations, India and Pakistan. The region was part of the British Empire and in response to widespread demand for independence the notion of two states emerged and a line was drawn resulting in the largest mass migration in human history, with almost fifteen million people on the move. Hindus and Sikhs exited from lands marked as “Muslim” Pakistan into the “new” India, while Muslims departed India into the new state called Pakistan. - The White Line Project About page.
