Voyage account books

Scope and Content

Voyage account books for steam ships owned by the company. Each volume typically records: voyage number, voyage date(s), ports of call, costs expended on stores, victualling, repairs, pilotage, insurance, crew wages (includes name and rank) and earnings from cargo carried. A net profit or loss for each voyage is recorded. The first volume for each ship contains details of ship's "first cost" and the ship's particulars at the front. Annual entries have been made detailing the "General account", "Insurance account", "Charges account" and "Owner's account" throughout each volume.
