Administrative / Biographical History

Building societies originated in the self help movements of the 18th century. Working men began to pool their funds in organisations from which they could borrow to build homes. In the early days of the societies, once every member had a home the society could be closed - these were known as Terminating Societies. The Permanent Societies we know today began when they started to accept deposits from members with no intention of building. They then became institutions for savings and borrowing as well as mortgage providers.
