Books and lectures

The material in this sub-collection - relating to the books Sewell wrote, and the lectures he gave - was found scattered across his papers and brought together during the process of cataloguing and arranged chronologically. It includes:

-typed drafts of books and lectures

-correspondence

-images

-contracts

Sewell filed the material relating to books and lectures in A4 brown envelopes, gave each envelope a title, either the name he assigned to a draft book or lecture, or the name of the published work, and these titles have been retained.

Alongside writing an immense number of articles on a diverese range of subjects, Sewell also authored many books concerning primarily art, cars, and travel. He also wrote several autobiographical and fictional works, although some of these were never published. His published autobiographical works were particularly well received both by critics and the general public.

In addition, Sewell's reputation as an author and journalist, coupled with his expert knowledge of the arts, led to him being invited to give lectures for various institutions including schools, museums, and public lecture venues over a twenty year period. Subjects he spoke about included artists such as Pablo Picasso, Leonardo da Vinci, J. M. W. Turner and L. S. Lowry, as well as more general themes including Italian art, the teaching of art history, and fakes and forgeries.
