Literary Manuscripts and Printed Papers of Coventry Patmore; 1844-c.1935

Scope and Content

The first part of this series (Pt L 1-51) includes only one manuscript in Patmore's own hand; his last book 'The Rod, the Root, and the Flower' The other work of Patmore in manuscript form is the booklet of seven poems to Alice Meynell copied by Frederick Page. Other works by Patmore are in printed form. Of the writings about Patmore, an extended 'Study' and an article by Page and certain notes by Hewitt are in manuscript; the remaining articles and comments are in print being extracts from periodicals or magazines and newspaper cuttings.

The second part of this series (Pt L 52-73) contains material acquired by the University of Nottingham at various times since the initial accession. It contains several notebooks and loose notes in Patmore's own hand, including drafts of 'Night', 'Faithful for Ever' and 'Victories of Love' (the third and fourth books of 'The Angel in the House', and 'Sponsa Dei'. It also includes printed editions of some of Patmore's work, and collections of cuttings of newspaper and magazine articles authored by him.
