Finished artwork by Charlotte Hough to illustrate the short stories and limericks published in 'The Mixture as Before' (Heinemann, 1976). The contents of the file constitute a complete suite of artwork except for one illustration, which is missing from the file. However, a printed copy of the missing illustration is included in the file [see CH/13/40]. The file includes the original decorative capital letters and hand-lettered text reproduced in the book. Only two of the stories in this anthology were first published in this collection - 'The Milk of Human Kindness' and 'The Don't Know Girl'; all of the other stories, and their illustrations, were originally published in earlier anthologies of Charlotte Hough's stories. Further information on first publication is given at item level, where appropriate. The file also contains two sheets of original illustrations for a short story entitled 'Honeychile', which was not published in this anthology and does not appear to have been published in any of Charlotte Hough's other anthologies.
The illustrations are arranged below in the order in which the stories and limericks they illustrate appear in the published book, with the unpublished illustrations appearing at the end of the sequence.
