Scope and Content

Letters written by Miss Nellie Lees of Cartref Melus, Oakwood Park, Conwy to Mr. Arthur Crump of Fleet Street, London. Nellie lived with her family, who frequently saw the Stotts when they were 'in residence' in North Wales. Arthur worked for James Stott in his Fleet Street office, where he also lived.

The letters start in 1894 when Nellie was thirty and end in 1897, by which time the couple were engaged to be married. According to the Stott family history compiled by the donor, (CX104/1), the couple did eventually marry and went on to have two children.

The letters provide a fascinating insight into the life of the upper middle classes in the late 19th century and also reveal much about the lives of the Stott family.
