The Labour Party has a long history in Dundee, which can be dated back to the forming of the Dundee Trades Council in 1888. By the mid 1890s there was an active branch of the Independent Labour Party in Dundee and this eventually became a part of the Labour Party which was formed in 1906. In 1906 Alex Wilkie was elected a Labour MP for Dundee, and was (with the Dundonian George Barnes) one of the first two Labour MPs in Scotland. From then until 2015 at least part of Dundee was always represented by a Labour MP in parliament, with the exception of the period 1931-1945. During the twentieth century local branches of the Labour Party were organised in the city, usually based on the boundaries of the city's council wards.
