Correspondence sent to A. C. Hughes in response to his request for information on the capture of Mametz Wood (7-12 July 1916), which was placed in the South Wales local press (South Wales Echo, Western Mail etc). Also notes from interviews. Hughes' request: "I am making a study of the capture of Mametz Wood by the 38th (Welsh) Division in July 1916, and would be most interested to hear from anyone who took part in the attack or who is in possession of papers relating to it. I am particularly anxious to hear from anyone who went into action with the 16th Welsh (Cardiff City) Battalion or the 11th SWB (2nd Gwent Battalion) at 8.30am on July 7 1916. All letters will be acknowledged. A. C. Hughes, 39 The Uplands, Gerrards Cross, Bucks." A copy of the appeal is at 461/3.
