Administrative / Biographical History

The Mid and West Wales Fire Brigade was created in 1996, from the amalgamation of Dyfed, Powys and West Glamorgan county fire and rescue services. In 2003 it was renamed the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and divided into six County Command areas, based on the unitary authorities of Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Powys. The Mid and West Wales Fire Authority (now Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Authority) is made up of members nominated by the six unitary authorities and meets quarterly. It oversees the working of the Service and is responsible for policy making. The Fire Authority has three main committees: Finance & General Purposes (from 2003, Resources), Personnel, and Best Value (from 2003, Performance & Policy Review).
