Scope and Content

WILL: (30 June 1665) of Owen Lloyd of London, merchant. He gives his messuage and t'ment in Dutton Diffyth near Wrexham now in the tenure of Lettice Taylr for £20 p.a. to the Bishop of Bangor and his successors in that office, to his father Pierce Lloyd the elder, esq. his brother Pierce Lloyd the younger, esq. his brother in law Thomas Holland of Berw, esq. and to his sister Anne Woods and their heirs, in trust so that as long as his foster father William ap Harry David and his wife, O.L.'s nurse or ether of them lives £6. p.a. is to be paid to them. The rest of the money is to be used to place boys at least one of whom must be from Penrhos, yearly as apprentice to some good trade. After the decease of his foster father and nurse the whole of the rent to be used to this end, and one of the children to be sent yearly to London as an apprentice. He bequeathes to the trustees £400 in trust to buy lands to maintain 2 poor scholars in either of the Universities, both of which scholars are to be from Anglesey and one from pa. Penrhose. The parents and guardians of the children just mentioned must voluntarily depose before 3 of the trustees or 3 Justices of the Peace for Anglesey that they are not worth £40 in real and personal estate, and that if the parents be dead each child must not be worth £20 in real and personal estate. For the 2 children intended for the university their parents or guardians are also to dispose that they are not worth £100 in real or personal estate, and if the parents are dead the each child must not be worth above £50 in real and personal estate. In the case of any failure of the Trustees to firstly execute the trust the t'ment and £400 are bequeathed to the Bishop and succeeding Bishops of St. Asaph and to William Griffith of LLyn, esq. for 10 years to be used in whichever public charities they see fit, men to revert to the original trustees. The testator then makes numerous bequests to a large number of kindred and friends, and arranges for the payment of funeral expenses.
