The museum was formally established by a trust deed in 1977, and opened to the public in 1989/90. As (Joint) Honorary Colonel, Colonel George was ex-officio chair of the trustees from 1997 to 2006, and he was appointed as a trustee in his own right after retiring as Joint Honorary Colonel, serving until 2016
