Administrative / Biographical History
Archbishop Marsh's Library, better known as The Marsh Library was built in Dublin in 1701 by Archbishop Narcissus Marsh of Armagh (1638-1713) and was the first public library in Ireland. The Library was formally incorporated in 1707 by an Act of Parliament which vested the building and books in a number of religious and state officials and their successors as Governors and Guardians of the Library. The collections mainly focus on liturgical and other religious works but it also contains books and periodicals on medicine, law, science, travel, navigation, mathematics, music, surveying, classical literature and Irish history.
