This series consists of 743 files of information concerning British & Irish travellers to Italy, arranged alphabetically under the surname by which the individuals first travelled. The material contained in the files includes research notes compiled by Brinsley Ford and others involved in the publication of the Dictionary; copies of both original and published material held in other archive and library respositories; as well as off-prints, articles and publications.
The material in this series forms the basis of the publication: Brinsley Ford Archive et al. (1997) A dictionary of British and Irish travellers in Italy, 1701-1800 - compiled from the Brinsley Ford Archive. London: Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art by Yale University Press. However, much of the material appears in edited form.
