Administrative / Biographical History

On his appointment to the post of President at the Royal Geographical Society Markham made it clear that he wished Britain to mount a substantial Antarctic expedition. Royal Navy Captain Robert Falcon Scott led the resulting British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904. Markham continued to take an interest in polar exploration throughout his life.

The papers relate to the planning of the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 its course and results and polar exploration in general.
