Correspondence by Markham primarily on the organising, progress and results of the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott) and the relief expeditions which were sent to Discovery in McMurdo Sound. Some of the letters are written by Markham in his capacity as President of the Royal Geographical Society others are personal letters.

Later correspondence relates to the publication of the scientific results of the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 (leader Robert Falcon Scott), while earlier correspondence covers Arctic exploration.
