Photographs from the Jessie M King and E A Taylor collection (MS Gen 1654).
Includes personal snapshots and formal portraits of King and Taylor, their work and family including their daughter Merle (b 1909). The couple were an active part of the artist community and many of their friends and peers can be seen in the collection. Notable Scottish artists Dorothy Johnston and Anna Hotchkis are seen alongside King and others at Green Gate Close (Photo A56/223, Box B) and photographs of the sculptor H. S. Gamley and his work appear throughout the collection (Photo A56/418, Box D; Photo A56/483, Box F).
King and Taylor organised and took part in many historical pageants and the collection includes a significant number of formal portraits and photographs of these events. Of particular note is a collection of portraits, printed by Annan of Glasgow, to commemorate King’s contribution to the 1908 Scottish National Historical Pageant for which she designed some thirty costumes on the theme of Arthurian legend (Photo A56/513-570, Box G). King and Taylor can both be seen taking part, dressed as “Sir Perceval” and “The Holy Graal” respectively (Photo A56/546, Box G).
