Scope and Content

Transcript of letters from Isabella Salmond to her nephew Thomas Ross, 25 December 1888 and 27 January 1889, giving information on the genealogy of his family. [See also infra for gravestone inscription.] Transcript of Memorandum by Thomas Ross, Bachilton, Methven, 1883: An attempt to trace the genealogy of his family from the time of his grandparents Thomas Ross "born about 1669",* and Margaret Bell of Windyedge "born one year later", also traces their children especially Thomas, the writer's father, farmer of Elliothead in Abernethy who in 1786 developed a forerunner of the Levelling Box which was used for embanking. He also acquired the lease of Scotsfield and Muirmarch. Recounts the jealousy that existed between his step-brother Peter and himself. The writer, born in 1804, gains lease of farm of Wardheads and becomes Public Salesman in Carse of Gowrie, undertakes management of Mugdrum and later the Carpow estates and the Leys estate. Leaves Wardheads and buys lease of the largest arable farm in the County of Perth. Briefly states the careers of his uncles. Also includes: Transcript of a further Memorandum by Thomas Ross in which he recounts his schooldays at Dunbarney Parish School and Perth Academy, harvesting in his youth, his father's characteristics and the family and ancestors of his mother. Copy of Inscription on Tombstone of Grace Kerr, Robert Ross and William Ross in Abernyte (Inchture) Churchyard. Referred to by Isabella Salmond in her letter of 25 December 1888. List of farms indicating parish and area in which they were situated.
