Administrative / Biographical History

In February 1969 discussions took place regarding the regionalisation of co-operative societies in the Leicestershire region. Following these talks, in March 1969, it was agreed that Leicester Co-operative Society, Melton Mowbray Industrial Co-operative Society, Market Harborough Industrial Co-operative Society and Coalville Working Men's Co-operative Society would merge on 12th May 1969 to form Leicestershire Co-operative Society.

Following the merger, other local societies transferred engagements to Leicestershire Society including Barrow on Soar in 1972, Shepshed and Hathern in 1973, Kettering in 1978, Rothwell in 1982, Leicester Carriage Builders in 1983 and South Leicestershire in 1984.

In 1995 Central Midlands Co-operative Society merged with Leicestershire Co-operative Society to become Midlands Co-operative Society.
