Manuscript volumes from the Ashby Parish Library Special Collection, associated with Rev. Anthony Johnson

This material is held atUniversity of Nottingham Manuscripts and Special Collections

Administrative / Biographical History

The items form part of the Ashby Parish Library Special Collection (see APL). The collection consists of books acquired by the parish priests of St Helen’s in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, and augmented by occasional (including two large) bequests from donors with ties to Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The use of the Parish Library was usually limited to the clergy, however, occasionally access was broadened to include interested or specific sections of the local laity as was the case with the parishioners of Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The books are mainly of theological interest but humanities and lay general interest topics are also featured.

These manuscript volumes appear to be associated with Rev. Anthony Johnson, Rector of Swarkstone at the time of the writing of the volumes (1731-1733), but previously Vicar of St Helen's, Ashby-de-la-Zouch (1711-1715)

Custodial History

In 1852 the library was moved into the vicarage and it would remain on the move over the next 100 years as the books were transported into the church and back into the vicarage depending on the preference of the incumbent. In 1969 the Ashby Parish Library was moved to the Rare Book Room of Loughborough’s School of Librarianship (part of Loughborough Technical College, later University). In 2013 the Ashby Parish Library was officially deposited at Manuscripts and Special Collections, University of Nottingham. The Collection is closed, and no works will be added to it.
