Administrative / Biographical History

Edmund Ethelston was the eldest son of Charles Wickstead Ethelston of Uplyme Rectory, Devon, and Wicksted Hall, Cheshire, and Anne Peel, daughter of Robert Peel of Wallington Hall, Norfolk. Edmund assumed the surname of Peel by royal licence in 1851. The Ethelston family also acquired an estate in Llandrinio, Montgomeryshire. Edmund inherited the family estates at Montgomeryshire and Norfolk and he purchased the Bryn-y-Pys estate in Flintshire in about 1850. According to the 1873 return of owners of land Edmund Peel of Bryn-y-Pys owned an estimated 5,779 acres in Wales (all in Flintshire, Denbighshire and Montgomeryshire) with an estimated rental of £11,187. During the twentieth century the Norfolk and Llandrinio estate were sold. After the death of Major Hugh Peel in 1950 the Bryn-y-Pys mansion was let and a large proportion of its contents sold. The mansion had deteriorated so badly that it was demolished in 1956.
