Scope and Content

This collection consists of corporate records produced by the Society, such as Society minutes, agendas and reports by Society members and officials, financial records and other documents either produced by or collected by the Society. Items such as the Society's constitution give an indication of the aims of the Society. The collection also encompasses journals, newsletters and pamphlets relating to local issues, newspaper cuttings and photographs. Of particular interest are the array of aerial photographs taken by the RAF in the 1940s and 1950s which were acquired by the Society, showing the entirety of the Gower peninsula and other regions particularly to the north of Swansea.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Gower Society was created in 1947 and its founding members were Dr Gwent Jones, a GP; Bernard Rees, a history student at the University of Wales, Swansea; Jim Rees, a teacher, and Ernest Morgan, a retired architect. They set up the Society with the intention of trying to preserve the character of the Gower peninsula; to safeguard public access and rights-of-way; to encourage people to study and appreciate its history and heritage. The Society has in its lifetime, therefore, been involved with appeals against unsuitable planning applications and considerable conservation work. The Society also acts as a publishing house, producing literature of local interest, such as the journal, Gower. The Gower Society continues to call for the preservation and appreciation of the Gower peninsula.
