Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Charles Keene had a long and distinguished service with Leicester City Council, sitting on various committees from 1926-1970. His particular interest was education and he chaired the Education Committee, was Chair of Governors of the Colleges of Art and Technology, and Chairman of the City of Leicester Polytechnic. He was made a Justice of the Peace in 1940, Alderman in 1945, awarded the CBE in 1950, served as Lord Mayor in 1953 and was knighted in 1969.

This portrait was sculpted by Percy Brown, teacher of sculpture, in 1939.
